The Triumph of Independent Media

The article How a Misguided War Led to a Powerful Nonprofit Partnership by Vincent Stehle addresses the growth of nonprofit media in light of the mainstream media's failure during the Iraq War. I think this clearly shows that independent media picks up the stories that the mainstream ignores, thereby forcing the issues into the mainstream press.

In specific regard to the Iraq War, I'm constantly shocked to learn how much of the mainstream media acted like puppets for the Bush Administration, rather than using a critical eye to investigate and report. As Andre Schiffrin, founder of the New Press said, "[nonprofit media] are now playing the classic role of the fourth estate in our democracy."

This is more relevant than ever in regards to the Trump Administration. During the 2016 election, the mainstream media gave Trump too much of a platform, which certainly helped him to be elected to the presidency. On the other hand, many nonprofit outlets such as Democracy Now! and The Young Turks reported on Trump with a critical eye and acted as the fourth estate.

Additionally, prior to reading this article, I was unfamiliar with the Media Consortium. I think a group like this is very important because smaller independents banding together can help them stand up the large conglomerates that control the mainstream media. After all, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
